This is just an educational or verification step. Absent any other fix, this is one option to potentially try. Defintely watch the above bug. Does it still work for you if you put the application launcher widget on a application menu bar panel?
Using X11 session currently. An application menu bar, as you call it, is really nothing other than an empty panel with the global menu widget already on it. But that is not how I set things up on my end. KRunner is an application built into Plasma 5 to perform functions and run commands quickly, and features a "runner" system to customize functions available for use.
Install the krunner package. In some workspaces such as a blank desktop, starting to type will automatically bring up KRunner. Plasma 5 does not contain default way to specify krunner search only by active window titles.

I have not upgraded nor knowlingly made any system changes but it has suddenly stopped working. How do I figure out what caused the change - any chance it will it be in a log file somewhere?
Searching the web is resulting in a lot of waffle with very few attempted answers, and so far none are helping. I'm not installing ksuperkey or any other packages - it was working with what's currently installed, so there must be a fix that doesn't involve installing packages.

It would still be nice to have some idea what it was and if there's a way to resolve it without rebooting. Wow, that must be annoying, but if it's that frequent it may be debuggable.
Next time it occurs, run " xev " in a terminal and check whether pressing Super key triggers any output. In fact I'd run it now, save the output, then compare if there's any differences when it stops working. If you have a USB keyboard, try plugging that in and seeing if it's affected could help narrow down where the issue is. There might be other clues - maybe there's a Plasma log you can increase verbosity for and see if it brings up anything.
