Which diction choice is appropriate when speaking to a teacher

A journal might be like a conversation with a close friend where there is the freedom to use slang or other casual forms of speech. A column for a newspaper may be more like a high-school graduation speech: it can be more formal, but it can still be funny or familiar. An academic paper is like a formal speech at a conference: being interesting is desirable, but there is no room for personal digressions or familiar usage of slang words.

In all of these cases, there is some freedom of self-expression while adapting to the audience. In the same way, writing should change to suit the occasion. Anything you write should still have your voice: something that makes your writing sound uniquely like you. A personal conversation with a friend differs from a speech given to a large group of strangers. Just as you speak to different people in different ways yet remain yourself, so the tone of your writing can vary with the situation while the voice -- the essential, individual thoughts and expression -- is still your own.

But the pauses between the notes—ah, that is where the art resides. One reason why speakers may lack effective delivery is because they are not moving their mouths sufficiently so that each sound can be heard clearly. Try to over-enunciate when speaking; this will ensure that you will move your mouth more and your words will come out clearly.

Method of practice : Use Dr. Seuss rhymes to practice enunciation and clarity. As a result, they use sounds and words which are common, but distracting in formal speech. These words include, but are not limited to:. Ways to diagnose : Use audio recording, video recording or have a partner listen to you speak and use a signal a sign, or yelling STOP! You may even retain your friendship with your partner.

Also, consider using literal pauses in instead of using a filler word. This gives you time to think and let your brain catch up with your rate of speech. It is always important that others hear what what a public speaker is saying. This can become problematic in a large room. Speech that is difficult to hear can never persuade or keep the attention of the audience. Remedy : Work on projecting your voice, erring on the side of being too loud rather than too quiet.

Written by Joseph M. What is Diction? What is Denotation and Connotation? How should I consider diction when composing or interpreting the works of others? Diction is the vocabulary, the words, used in a text the accent, pronunciation, or speech-sound quality of a speaker Diction may also be referred to as Word Choice. What is the Role of Diction in Communication?

Words matter. Words have meaning at two levels: the literal level, which is also called the denotative level. Over time, as we learn new words, we associate those words with emotions and the context in which we learned them.

Words, at the connotative level, can imply values, judgments, and feelings. Words can have similar denotations and yet remarkably different connotations.
