Does the church need both teaching and preaching? Preaching and teaching have a certain amount of similarities, but we must be clear — preaching is not teaching and teaching is not preaching.

During my own ministry I have always felt the need to Teach truth as well as make clear the need and way of salvation. In our teaching of Truth, it must be founded on God's Word as that is the Foundation to build on.
However, it is so vital that the need of, and the way of, Salvation is clearly shown. What a joy it is to lead someone to know the Lord as Saviour, and then to help them through good teaching to grow in the Lord.

I will recommend that every gospel minister get, read and meditate on a copy of "The Reformed Pastor" by Richard Baxter. It will drive us on our knees when we realise how far away from biblical pattern our pulpit ministrations are today. We have lost the art of expounding the Word because we loath the disciplined study of the Word and conformity to biblical pattern.
I have heard of preachers who denounce doctrinal exposition out of blatant ignorance. Read Nehemiah chapter 8 and get inspired. You announce the good news, you proclaim the gospel, you decree warnings of the consequences of living for yourself or following the ways of the world, and then you instruct and educate people about what the Bible says, why it says that, and address common questions and objections that people might have.
Preaching is proclamation and education, exhortation and education, declaration and discipleship. If you want to preach well, like Jesus, you must do both. And when we study the Bible and the difference between these words, I believe that is what God wants us to see. And that is the difference between preaching and teaching. In the Bible, preaching is proclamation; teaching is education. I can teach for hours, but i hardly preach beyond 15mins. At a Saturday Bible study I was asked to tell them what was the difference between a Preacher and teacher.
